8:00- 9:00 in the Sigsbee Library
During the week of January 26th, Orwell’s 1984 soared to No.1 on Amazon after Kellyanne Conway described Sean Spicer’s words on the size of the inaugural crowd as “alternative facts.” Students were given the task to find out- Are there similarities in the themes in 1984 and our President and his administration? Join ELA 8H and English 1H students for a fair and balanced analysis of evidence from 1984 and President Trump's administration.

Baking Blues
5, 4, 3, 2, 1!
Look at the oven it's almost done!
Pop it in the oven for just one more minute,
Here in the kitchen there is no known limit.
I hear the “ding” and know that it's ready,
But I opened the door and realized I am no Betty.
Supposedly cake that I put in the pan,
But nothing I did went according to plan.
It was bubbling and sizzling with a burning taste,
I threw it away-what a monstrous waste!
Let us mix together a brand new creation,
Join me in my exclusive cooking station.
This time I'll add in a squeeze of extract,
All of my measurements must be exact.
I cross all my fingers when I hear the shrill beeping,
But I open the oven and wish I were sleeping.
Yet again it was charred and more like a brick,
If I served this to someone it would make them quite sick.
Maybe instead I should have a green thumb,
Or pick up an instrument-possibly the drum?

The News
Listen to the laughter in the wind, for soon it will carry the news
That I have lost a pair of beloved shoes.
No, I assure you, this is no foolish ruse.
Oh how this will start so many feuds.
For I have lost a pair of beloved shoes
Mother will be awfully agitated,
Father will be exasperated,
But I am not left dejected.
For I have lost a pair of beloved shoes, and a new and improved pair is expected,
My shoes have grown a pair of feet,
And up and left this narrow, desolate street.
This very street where there are no fresh tracks of feet
This very street where not a creature is stirring not even a parakeet.
This very street where all the daisies rest in peace.
My shoes have grown a pair of feet, and up and left this very dark street.
But I am not as frivolous as an inquisitive rat
Who roams the stores filled with hats
For I know just how to peruse
The stores filled with exquisite and ravishing shoes
I spend my time wondering what color they will be
But when the time comes we will surely see
Perhaps it will be the wondrous blue of the deep, dark sea
Or black and yellow, just like a busy, buzzing, bee
Listen to the whispers in the street, for soon the rumors will turn to news
That I have lost a pair of beloved shoes.
No, I assure you, this is no foolish ruse.
For I have lost a pair of beloved shoes

The Lonesome Beach
As I walked around the lonesome beach,
The sand stuck in my hair.
My feet along the oceanside,
My heart wept in despair.
My shoulder slumped, my head faced down;
The ocean called my name.
Waves moving in, “crash, crash,”
Still, I stayed the same.
As I walked around the lonesome beach,
My feet stuck in the sand.
The summer’s heat came crashing down
To touch the oceans hands.
The palm trees swayed from side to side
As I admired the oceans blues.
I threw off my shoes, pulled down my hair,
And ran with nothing to lose.
As I splashed around the lonesome beach,
I plugged my nose and took a dive.
The pain washed away with the tide and the shells
And once more, I felt alive!

The Quiet Summer Sea
The sand in my hair, and the salt in the air, what a wonderful place to be in the summer. No suburban noise to bother you, no people to pester you, just you, alone, relaxing with the sand between your toes. The breeze coming in, giving you a break from the hot sun, beating down on your skin. The waves serenely creeping up to your chair, but they never manage to catch you. The sounds of the seagulls in the distance, looking for a bite to eat. You reach for your sunglasses, feeling around in your bag. Finally, you find them, putting them on your sunburned face, leaving behind a little sting on your skin. You see little minnows coming up to the shore, looking like they are hiding from something. The calmness of this beach gets to you little by little. You feel your eyelids getting heavier, and heavier. You drift off into a deep sleep, with nobody to disturb you on this tranquil beach. When you wake up, you see a crowded beach with people everywhere, and want to be back on that serene beach alone.

Loneliness
Something has been going around like a flu,
It’s something everyone gets and trust me it nothing new
Its loneliness.
No it won't make you sick, or hurt, or gross,
But it will make you yearn for more companionship than most.
Its loneliness.
It makes you feel alone and empty,
Like a can without other food and its pantry.
Its loneliness.
It’s like you’ve taken out your bladder,
You cant tell anythings wrong, but you can feel that somethings the matter. Its loneliness
Curing it’s easier said than done,
Fore getting all the ingredients causes you to go for a little run.
It's all in curing loneliness.
You first need friends to talk,
They should be real not made of chalk,
It's all in curing loneliness.
You then need food galore,
Enough to feed the biggest, strongest boar.
It's all in curing loneliness.
You should then get together a chat,
You’ll eat, you’ll dance, you’ll have fun,
And poof, no more loneliness.

The Life of a Writer
I came into this world filled with energy
My hair it was as black as ebony
I was happy like little buzzing bees
For I had no responsibilities
I grew older, yet still filled with energy
I observed the beautiful world around me
I had no worries
For still I had no responsibilities
Now I was in a place
Where learning was not a disgrace
For I was in a battlefield
Where pencil and paper was my sword and my shield
I am still in this war torn battlefield
Pencil and paper is still my sword and my shield
Yet now I am a general and not a novice
When I bear my weapons I am flawless
Today I am a veteran to that rugged war
I figured I had better things in store
I still carry my sword and my shield
As a token from that old battlefield
Now I create worlds and friends
I can make fantasies that never end
You may think it's witchcraft and wizardry
But I am just a writer can’t you see
Today I am old and tomorrow I’ll be gone
But I hope my legacy will still live on
I hope you become a writer just like me
It is my dream and the truest to be
Luna Rodriguez-Honorable Mention
A Military Child
Leaving your friends
Is always a trend
Your mind twists and bends
Along with the letters you send
But green grass grows day and night
As you pack to leave and take flight
Better to worse
Better to worse
Protecting our country always comes first
But there is good behind the trouble
Even though it may not seem true
Every child’s heart is filled double
And every adventure is brand new.
