PROPOSAL FOR MAKE-UP DAYS
We recognize that people are anxious to hear how we will make up lost instructional time.  There is a proposal that has been sent to our Board of Directors and is awaiting approval both by the SCS Board and the Monroe County School District Board.  At SCS, we already exceed minimum requirements, even with the lost time.  However, we are committed to excellence and want to be sure your children are not shortchanged because of time lost.

A summary of the proposal is listed below.  Please remember that this has not been approved yet.

Proposal
  • 15 student days lost during Irma
  • 2 make-up days already granted by Commissioner (do not need to be made up)
Instructional hours in a calendar year 1,026
Instructional hours lost 85.5
Hours made up by eliminating teacher planning days (3 days):  17.1  (Nov 27, Jan 8, March 19)
Hours made up by converting school holidays to instructional days 5.7 (Nov 10)

Hours made up by modifying the instructional calendar: 27 (extending early-out Wednesdays 2 hours/each & adding Dec 22 1/2 day PM)- first semester only
Total hours made up 49.8
Hours from the waiver of 2 instructional days authorized by the commissioner 11.4
Total reduction in instructional hours requested 24.3 (basically 4 additional days)

Summary
  • 3 professional days (after long recesses) replaced with student days
  • 1/2 days extended on Wednesday until winter break (enrichment resumes in January)
  • Veteran's Day holiday removed on November 10th ( will be excused for families with written requests)
HOW TO HELP SIGSBEE FAMILIES AFTER IRMA
  • Monetary donations to our free breakfast/lunch fund - estimated cost $25,000
  • Community service opportunities on weekends

DONATIONS FOR FREE BREAKFAST/LUNCH
As you know, our school is attempting to offset some stress and financial burdens on families after Irma by offering free breakfast and free lunch to all students.  The timeframe for this service has been extended to November 2nd.  The estimated cost of this program is approximately $25,000.

SCS does not participate in the national food lunch program and, therefore, does not receive funding for our meal plan.  Funding for free student breakfasts and lunches is coming from our general fund.  We've been able to provide free food staples to families through donations from churches and service organizations.  However, we do not have funding coming in for our food program.  Please encourage friends and family to donate to our food program through our webpage www.sigsbee.org or with a check made out to Sigsbee Charter School.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Our students, families, staff and friends have been identifying families in need of help
Part-time childcare needed:

One Sigsbee teacher is seeking child care for her 3 month old during school hours. Care is needed 2-3 times a week, beginning in November. Preferably someone that lives on or near base. If you are interested, please contact Principal Jannes:  eli.jannes@sigsbee.org

MONROE COUNTY EDUCATION FOUNDATION TO ACCEPT DONATIONS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICT FAMILIES

Monroe County School District officials have activated a Hurricane Relief Fund via the Monroe County Education Foundation.

With the help of an $80,000 donation from the Edward B. and Joan T. Knight Foundation, the MCEF initiated the relief fund to help students and teachers replace items lost in the storm that FEMA or insurance agencies will not be able replace, said MCEF Board President, Bryan Green. “Hurricane Irma has adversely impacted both teachers and students.   Many are now struggling in temporary or severely damaged homes, some students have lost school clothing and text books and all are faced with the practical and psychological effects of the storm.”

An outpouring of donations and supplies and resources from donors across the country have been well received. The next step for the district, however is to determine the long-term needs of the students and their families that have been affected. Initial reports from the district show about 100 teachers displaced and without a home, more than 200 students have been displaced and living in temporary housing after Irma, and more than 100 students have officially relocated out of the district.

Mr. Green said the need for access to resources long-term for teachers and students is great. The goal is to provide as many supplemental funding as a way to facilitate some normalcy for the students and their families. “Irma poses many challenges - not the least  of which is the loss of three weeks of education whilst the syllabus that needs to be taught within the next academic year remains the same.  Trying to do this whilst living in a temporary home will be a challenge to many teachers and students alike.”

The fund will also provide further counseling and any additional tutoring for students who may need help. The Monroe County Education Foundation was created in the Florida Keys in 1996 as a Florida not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing and improving educational experiences of students within Monroe County.

SCS Board Member Kevin Madok and his wife, Katrina, a teacher at Gerald Adams, need our help this weekend. Please bring work gloves and strong shoes/boots. Water and lunch will be provided. This will be outdoor work, mostly debris removal. Tools such as pitchforks and shovels would be wonderful.

WE'VE GOT MAIL!

Students from a school in Connecticut sent us a package of inspirational bookmarks to help our students feel supported after the hurricane.  Pictured left are just a few examples of their  awesome artwork and writing.
