    NSMI COMPUTER SCIENCE INITIATIVE
You may have caught glimpses of the Sigsbee Texas Team working and playing in Dallas, TX last week.  Our awesome crew quickly jumped on the opportunity to join the  National Math Science Initiative (NMSI),  a three-year support model for school districts across the nation to implement a comprehensive, evidence-based, Computer Science for All pathway.

Nine Sigsbee staff members and two math teachers from KWHS,  attended a weeklong professional development training provided at no-cost by NMSI and featuring the leaders in the field from universities  such as UCAL Berkeley, MIT, and Cornell.  Along with receiving support for the courses offered, and a number of free resources and materials, our team had the opportunity to craft an exciting and sustainable computer science plan.   I'd like to thank the following staff members and their families for shifting their summer vacations to join me in Dallas .

    Kim Burnett, elementary science teacher
Douglas Helkenn, 5th grade mathematics teacher
    Annette Maxwell, school counselor
    Ashley McCauley, 3rd grade teacher
    Jay Schwermer, Instructional Technology specialist
Kirsten Speicker, 6th grade mathematics teacher
Nicole Wahlgren, 8th grade science teacher
    Megan Wise, mathematics instructional coach

We will be training and implementing everything we learned starting with our pre-planning professional development time in August.  During the year, we will be sure to include a parent Coffee Clatch so that our caregivers can support an innovative, creative and healthy interest in Computer Science with their children.

    SCHOOL SUPPLIES- Reminder
We take pride in providing all initial school supplies for students at no cost to parents.  We know how stressful it can be to find just the right folder or brand of glue stick on a small island.  There are a few items that students typically bring from home.  Those are listed on our grade level websites.  You can click on any teacher in the grade level to see the items . Most grade levels require:

a backpack (must fit in cubby or locker)
    a filled reusable water bottle
a lunch box (if bringing lunch or snack)
    earbuds or headphones
    water shoes
    combination lock (middle school)
    uniform shirts (middle school)

Please make sure all items are labeled with the child's first and last name.
In addition, the websites contain lists of items that parents may donate.  We appreciate your generosity.  *Note- websites will be updated in early August, during pre-planning.
