If, when you receive your student’s Fall pictures, you are unhappy with the result, please send the entire picture packet back to school with your student on Friday and the photographer will retake the picture.

For students who missed our picture days in the Fall, we will be looking to take yours on Friday too.

WHAT IS UNITY DAY?
October was designated as National Bullying Prevention Month.  Unity Day is an anti-bullying campaign that started in 2011, held on the third Wednesday in October.  This special day was created to unite all people in schools, communities and online against bullying. Students can express their support by wearing orange.

The color orange was chosen to represent Unity Day because it is described as vibrant, warm and inviting, and is commonly associated with safety and visibility. Every student is encouraged to wear something orange on this day.
The celebration of Unity Day has gained support from celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres and Anderson Cooper. This day is also supported and promoted by several national partners, including Disney/ABC Family and Cartoon Network.  At Sigsbee, students will take a pledge to end bullying by posting a kindness promise on an orange hand stencil.  The hands will be displayed in the cafeteria.

PURPLE PINKIE DAY

Thursday 7:40-8:30 AM

Please support us in working alongside the Rotary Clubs of Key West to help eradicate polio across the globe.

Every year, Monroe County schools assist the Rotary Clubs of Key West in eradicating polio by participating in Purple PInkie Day.  Rotary eradicated polio worldwide until it resurfaced in Afghanistan. Rotarians continue to work to keep this disease controlled across the globe.  A $1 contribution immunizes 5 children and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation match these funds each year 2:1.

The purple pinkie represents the mark of an immunized child in other countries.  Our students will NOT be getting immunizations; they are getting a symbolic pinkie based on the tradition and their donation.  In order to preserve our instruction time, the Rotary volunteers will be present during arrival only.  Students should bring their donations to one of the three stations that will be set up.  Parents are welcome to join in on the drive.

Purple Permission slips are only necessary if you do NOT want your child to participate (see below).  However, anyone MAY donate $1 (or more).

There will be three stations set up with Rotarians trained to dye pinkies.  Only students who are donating need to come to the stations.  All donations are welcome.

THREE STATIONS beginning at 7:40 AM
Front Hut (Grades K-2 and anyone who arrives at the front of the school)
Outside G Wing -by 5th grade science room (3-5 students)
Middle School Picnic Tables (Grades 6-8)

How you can help:  Please talk to the children about this campaign and polio.  Make sure they remember their donations.  Be on time.  Encourage them to wear purple on ThursdayThank you.

MIX IT UP LUNCH RETURNS: TUESDAY
KINDNESS CAMPAIGN

National Mix It Up Day
On Tuesday, we will host our second Mix It Up day in the cafeteria for grades 4-8 to celebrate National Mix It Up Day.  Our counselors will bring out our conversation starters at each table to help ease the discussions.  Students from each grade will be randomly assigned tables for the period.

K-5 COSTUME PARADE
November 1
2:15-2:45 PM
parents welcome!
Please note that our Annual Costume Parade is taking place on Friday afternoon, the day AFTER Halloween.  This is an annual event that allows our elementary students to proudly display their costumes.  The parade starts around the front circle area where we conduct morning carline. The parade will start promptly at 2:15 PM. You are welcome to stop by (and certainly dress up if you like) to join us in some old fashioned fun! Please make sure to stand behind the seated classes (around the perimeter) so we have a safe and clear parade route and bring your cameras!

If you wish to take your child home after the parade, please be sure to sign out with the classroom teacher. The parade should be over around 2:45 PM.

We thank you in advance for your support in helping your child follow the rules about costumes. Teachers will send information about specific costume guidelines for each grade level.  General guidelines are listed below.  Please look for specific directions from your child's teachers about when they are allowed to wear costumes.

 COSTUME GUIDELINES
  • Costumes are not allowed to have any  dangerous objects (i.e. toy swords, toy guns, chains, skates, or spray cans) . Please leave all accessories at home.
  • Students should be able to manipulate their own costumes so that they can use the bathroom.
  • Please make sure young children in costume before the parade, are able to sit and learn without distraction.
  • Costumes should not be too scary (so that our younger students are not frightened). No blood or gore.  No masks or costumes that cover the head.
  • Costumes should be appropriate length (not too short, too tight, or see-through).
  • Shoes must be safe (no slippers or high heels)
  • Face masks, hoods or anything that covers the face cannot be worn.
  • Please leave the candy at home.
  • Students who do not wish to participate are welcome to watch the parade.
  • If a child does not meet the guidelines, he/she will be asked to remove the costume.  All candy will be returned.

Parent REVERSE Permission:
PURPLE PINKIE PROJECT

In 1985, Rotary International began an effort to eliminate Polio worldwide.  Polio has not been a problem in the United States for many years, but this is not the case in many developing counties.  By partnering with the World Health Organization, Rotary International has achieved 99% reduction of Polio worldwide.  The Rotary Clubs in Key West have been participating in this effort from the beginning.  HELP US CLOSE THE GAP.

With the Purple Pinkie Project, we wish to make our school students part of the solution.

On October 24th, members from The Rotary Clubs in Key West will visit your child’s school.  It takes $1.00 to immunize five children from polio.  Students are encouraged to bring $1.00 or more to help eliminate Polio worldwide and raise awareness throughout our community.

When a student puts $1.00 in the Purple Pinkie Bucket, we mark his/her pinkie with a Purple Magic Marker as a symbol of one child immunized from Polio.

Markers are used by Rotary International to mark children after they have been immunized from Polio.  This prevents double dosage.  It is safe.

ONLY RETURN THIS SIGNED PERMISSION SLIP IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR CHILD TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS IMPORTANT PUBLIC AWARENESS RAISING PROJECT.
