THIS WEEKEND!  TEST YOUR ZOOM
CLICK HERE for two videos to help your child access Zoom using their secure network.  Parents are encouraged to get into the waiting room of our test meeting this weekend to ensure that their children will have not trouble on Monday.  There is no actual meeting; you are just trying to get to the waiting room.  Once this happens, you know you are successful.   This is especially important for children using SeeSaw (k-2) because the first set of instructions are rather lengthy.  After your first access, the steps are simplified.  The demonstration videos are also on our home learning website, under tech tutorials.  If you have trouble getting in, email Mr. Schwermer. jay.schwermer@sigsbee.org

HOME LEARNING EXPECTATIONS

Be Respectful- you are entering the homes of your friends, classmates, teachers.  Behave respectfully.

Be Responsible- be prepared: dressed appropriately, fed, logged in, and ready to learn before each live lesson.  Take care of your technology and keep track of your assignments.

Be Resilient- this is new for everyone and there are some going to be some challenges. Be flexible and kind.  We will make this awesome together.

Teachers will provide age-appropriate guidelines for online behavior.  Remember, because students are navigating from home or other facilities, it is important for a responsible adult to monitor their usage and access.

Week 1 Sigsbee Home Learning
School Hours:
Monday- Thursday
8:00 AM- 3:00 PM (3 hours of live instruction)
Friday- Specials Day
(No formal instruction: work on art, music, PE, hands-on explorations)

CLASSES START MONDAY, MARCH 30th
TERMS TO KNOW
Live Lessons-
the teacher will be instructing at a designated time and students should participate to see the lesson
modeled.  These lessons will be recorded for students who miss them. However, the social interaction
is the MOST important part so, please make it a point to join.
Office Hours-
the teacher is available to assist students, provide feedback, answer emails.  This will happen daily,
Monday-Thursday, during scheduled times.
Small Groups- students will be invited into small group instruction, which will happen via Google Meet
or Zoom.  Look in SeeSaw (K-2) or Google Classroom (3-8) for the links to all live instruction.
Independent Work- students will demonstrate  their understanding through independent practice;
much of this will be turned in and assessed.  While there will be deadlines for submission,
there will also be flexibility in the student’s day so work can be completed at times that are convenient.
Recorded Lessons- In some instances, teachers will pre-record lessons and ask students to preview
them before a live lesson.  These lessons will be posted in SeeSaw (K-2) or Google Classroom (3-8)
and can be viewed at any point prior to the live lesson.

ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS FROM PARENT MEETING

1. What about volunteer hours?
The expectation for the remainder of our time is that you help to facilitate and support your child's home learning experience.   All other volunteer requirements are eliminated.

2.  Will students be able to work in the evenings?
Yes, however, live lessons occur throughout the day from 8 AM-3 PM depending on your child's schedule and students must participate live.  Students should be able to complete their independent work during breaks and in the evening.

3. Will students be able to talk to one another during the Zoom sessions?
Yes, but all discussions will be facilitated and controlled by the teacher.  The teacher can override a child's microphone or video access.

4.  What if my child breaks/loses the iPad or Chromebook we borrowed from the school?
Contact Mr. Schwermer (jay.schwermer@sigsbee.org) to obtain a replacement.  This may not be feasible immediately.  Your child's account will be charged a $75 repair fee.  If your child loses a device, your child's account will be charged for the full replacement value of the device.

5.  What if we are PCSing before the end of school?
Transfer season is at a hiatus at the moment.  We will ensure that your child's records are forwarded electronically and all required coursework is complete.

6.  How does ZOOM work and how do I access it for my child?
We have purchased a more secure level of Zoom that is restricted to sigsbee.org users.  You will be receiving directions and tutorials on how to access it through SeeSaw (K-2) and Google Classroom (3-8).  Your child will be able to access Zoom through any device as long as he/she is logged in using the Sigsbee account.

7.  I heard there are no grades.  Is this true?
No, school grades have been eliminated this year but students are still accountable and graded on their work.  During the first week, grades will consist of participation and engagement.  If they attend their lessons and participate appropriately, they will receive full credit.  After week 1, students in the upper grades will have graded assessments with grades being entered in Focus.  State testing has also been cancelled for this year.  However, the Algebra 1 Honors students will need to take the Algebra EOC at some point, when it is offered (more information coming on this from the teacher).

8.  My child receives support services at school.  What will this look like during this time?
Staff who typically deliver support services (i.e. guidance counselors, ESE teachers, speech teachers, interventionists) are still available.  During the first week of home learning, they will be contacting you for a wellness check and to ensure that your child as all of the equipment and resources needed.  After week 1, they will begin providing services virtually in a way that is feasible for the situation.  The staff will contact you this week with more information.

REMEMBER, USE OUR HOME LEARNING WEBPAGES TO GUIDE YOU.  WE ARE ALSO JUST AN EMAIL AWAY.
