FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Now, through December 31st, we will be receiving free breakfast and lunch for ALL students.  Our vendor lunch program will be suspended in order to provide this option for our families. Lunch count will be done WEEKLY.  Please use THIS FORM to indicate which meals your child wants this week.

All breakfasts and lunches will be grab-n-go and delivered to class.  Students will be able to have working breakfast in their rooms.  Food is also provided for students on their alternating day (at home learning) and for siblings.

We hope this opportunity will provide you some relief from the additional financial strain that Covid-19 may have placed on your families.  We are working with the school district to replace some items with healthier options.

Because the program requires us to prepare each meal, it is very important that families who want to participate, fill out the form by Sunday evening each week.

September Reopening Details (with video)

The video will walk you through the A/B day schedule, arrival & dismissal,  breakfast and lunch and a review of the health policies.  If you are new to Sigsbee, don't worry about being unfamiliar with the campus.  We will have MANY people outside ready to help guide you to class.

School Starts Monday on campus for
 A Day students

Please be VERY careful as you drive on base as many students are walking or biking to school.  We are located in a residential area.  Be respectful of the neighbors and don't block their driveways.  A reminder that drivers may not be on their cell phones while driving on the installation and speed limits are strictly enforced to keep the kids safe.

Expect delays on the first days of school.  The whole community is sending students back to campus.   You might want to leave extra time to commute on base.

For those who have not been to Sigsbee before, if your child is in kindergarten through second grade:
  • once you pass the gate, follow the causeway to Sigsbee Road (fork on right) and bear right.
  • Pass the gas station, housing, Commissary and NEX on your right.  You will see a big turf field and tennis courts on the left.  Turn right onto Felton Road across from the tennis courts.  If you've gone to the car wash, you went too far.
  • Follow the winding road around to the school.
If your child is in third-eighth grade:
  • Once you pass the gate, follow the causeway until your first right.  This is Gilmore Drive.  Turn right onto Gilmore.
  • Make an immediate left onto Farragut Road
  • Then your first right onto Truxton
  • Follow  Truxton  SLOWLY into the back parking lot of the school
For those who live on base:
  • We recommend you walk your child to the property as school days add a new level of traffic to the equation.  Young students often need help navigating the traffic before being comfortable to do so independently.  All KINDERGARTENERS must be escorted by a grownup or older sibling/neighbor.
VIRTUAL STUDENTS:  Remember that your team huddles may be delayed on Monday and Tuesday since many students will be coming onto campus for the first time.  Don't worry.

Base Passes
Off-site base pass pickup is available at Sears (west side of the building by the Garden Center) this Saturday 10-12 and this Sunday 12-2. This is for families who have already submitted copies of their licenses. Passes will also be available at the gate on Monday.  Mrs. Rosch will have any passes that were pre-ordered ready.  Remember, anyone who does not have a military ID must have a pass to access the base.

If you have not sent your license to the school yet, please email Pat.Gladding@sigsbee.org with a copy.    Families who email licenses today (Saturday) will be able to pick up passes on Sunday at Sears or at the gate on Monday.

Rainy Day Dismissal
It is rainy season in Key West and that means it's bound to start raining right at dismissal.  Please consider this as your child leaves in the morning.  We have an outdoor campus and do everything we possibly can to avoid indoor dismissal as it holds up car line for what seems like forever.

If it's raining, students will be sheltering under awnings and getting called down to the cars.  Pack a light poncho or send an umbrella if you are concerned about a wet sailfish.   And remember, while you may have to wait a few more minutes in your car, the staff is getting drenched with a smile.

A Message from Mr. Hendricks, music teacher
Dear Sigsbee Students and Parents,
I'm sad to announce that I will be leaving Sigsbee.  I have recently been offered, and have accepted, a new elementary music position at Horace O'Bryant School.  My last day here will be Friday the 18th.  Please know that I have loved my time here at Sigsbee and have especially loved getting to know your students and their families.  As many of you know, my wife is the middle school band director at HOB and I am accepting the position to join her there.  In my nearly 30 years of teaching, 15 of those have been at the same school as my wife...we miss that, and I had to take the opportunity when it was presented to me.  I am working with Eli to make this transition as smooth as possible and am working on the music website to give the students some things to do musically in the meantime.
Please feel free to keep in touch with me through district email:  harley.hendricks@keysschools.com

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of teaching your children!

A note about music:  We posted the open position for music and band and will begin a search for a new teacher.  In the meantime, we've moved the schedule around to ensure that your children have specials each day at school and are tapping into the talent of some of our staff members to continue the elementary program.  Mr. Hendricks will be here for the first week of school.  Next week's Scoop will give you more information about how his classes will be covered until a new teacher is hired.

5th GRADE POETS INSPIRED BY MAYA ANGELOU'S

Life Doesn't Frighten Me At All
After reading Maya Angelou's poem, Life Doesn't Frighten Me At All, fifth grade students in Mrs. Bleske's class talked about what resonated with them and what they noticed about the poet's craft.  They were left to create their own piece in the poet's style.  Below are two examples of how we use writing to help understand what is on the minds of our students
