May 3- May 7
When we were given an "extra week" of Spring Break in March of 2020, I don't think anyone could have predicted how drastically the world would change in the following days, weeks, and months. This year has certainly had more than its fair share of challenges, twists and turns. Now, with 19 days of school left for students, the year has somehow managed to fly by and drag on all at the same time.
The one constant that we've been able to rely on is our collective commitment to helping the children persevere and thrive through difficult times. Our teachers have dealt with managing in-person and virtual instruction, often at the same time. Somehow, they are able to move our students forward while managing mask breaks, social distancing and a myriad of health protocols. Our counselors have been working well into the evening addressing elevated stress levels and social-emotional crises at unprecedented levels. Our support personnel and maintenance staff have cleaned, disinfected, spaced and reorganized our facility time and time again. Our nurse has been juggling boo boos, tummy aches and contact tracing while answering questions about evolving situations. Our cafeteria staff has taken on free breakfast and lunch for anyone who wants it. The organizational structure of the school has changed several times, sometimes with only a few days notice, to accommodate new guidelines, mandates and/or concerns, keeping the Office Staff hopping. Even the furniture has changed. At the same time, our campus has been closed off to volunteers and guests, leaving our small staff to cover gaps created by multiple quarantines and illness.
All of this is managed and embraced by an incredible group of passionate professionals who are fueled by the students' excitement about learning and being at school with their friends. While it has been exhausting, it has also been rewarding and a testament to our community's resilience.
This week, we recognize our school staff during Staff Appreciation Week. I encourage you and your children to take a moment to write a card, draw a picture, or send an email to acknowledge someone on staff who you are grateful for. These personal sentiments are treasured and valued more than you know. Let's help our awesome team kick it in to the finish line.
SUMMER SCHOOL
Thank you to everyone who signed their child up for the Sigsbee Summer School Camp Program!
We still have a limited number of openings for current 2nd - 5th grade students, so if you'd like to sign up please fill out this short interest survey. The dates of this FREE program are June 7 - June 25th and July 12 - July 30th and you can choose the weeks that accommodate your summer schedule. The hours will be from 9:00am - 2:00 pm. Our goal is to provide a fun and educational IN PERSON summer series that supports continued learning and social interactions for students entering 3rd- 6th grades. Students will receive instruction in Mathematics and English Language Arts through theme-based hands-on activities. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. All current Covid protocols will be in effect.
An email will be sent out this week confirming the dates that you have chosen for your child to attend. If you have any questions, please direct them to Janice Wish at janice.wish@sigsbee.org, or call (305) 294-1861 ext. 63324.
