APPRECIATING OUR CLEANING CREW
Some of you may have heard about a widespread Tik Tok challenge called Devious Licks that encourages youth to vandalize their school's bathrooms. The challenge is resulting in disciplinary actions, arrests and widespread concern both locally and nationally.
Obviously, this behavior is unacceptable, concerning and disgusting. So, in true Sigsbee Spirit, we are turning this around. We are giving students an opportunity to do something positive to appreciate our Cleaning Crew this week. There will be boxes outside the office for children to add drawings, letters, cards or tokens of appreciation for our maintenance crew (Mr. G and Mr. Mortenson) and our evening cleaning crew (approximately 5 individuals). The donations will be delivered daily through Friday. Please consider showing your appreciation for our amazing group; they have been working so hard with extra protocols in place to keep our facility sanitized and safe.
Here are some fun facts about our two full time staff members:
Mr. G not only takes care of the facility, he does all of our landscaping and has transformed our campus into a flowering green space. He always asks to run his Ukelele enrichment class in ADDITION to everything else he has to do AND he serves as our incredibly popular Sigsbee Elf-on-a-Shelf in December.
Mr. Mortenson was formerly a Police Chief and responds immediately any time we have a concern on campus. He serves on our school's safety team and is an incredible role model to many of our students, offering guidance when they are upset. Mr. Mortenson ALSO runs our basketball elective, helps supervise student groups and supports our basketball team. You can usually find him up in the bleachers at all the games. Students love his CSI presentations during middle school elective.
When students engage in this reckless behavior, they are sending a message that these individuals are not appreciated for all they do. Please talk to your students and make sure they are not following this challenge. It is definitely NOT a part of the culture we created.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
We are entering Parent-Teacher Conference season for families with students in kindergarten - third grade. If you have not scheduled a first quarter conference with your child's teacher, please reach out ASAP as the next two Wednesday afternoons are being used to provide appointments.
Families who have students in grades 4-8 will receive a report card at the end of the quarter. You are welcome to request a parent conference should you want more information than that. Conferences may be requested by contacting your child's homeroom teacher.
Families can expect to review preliminary beginning-of-year data from English Language Arts assessments and Mathematics assessments. Teachers can also discuss how your child has adjusted to the classroom, work habits and any interventions or extensions that are in place to meet the needs of each child.
All conferences are virtual at this time.

START WITH HELLO
Our S.A.V.E. Promise middle school elective group did an excellent job in organizing a schoolwide initiative to "Start with Hello." The week's activities were a part of the Sandy Hook Promise, a group whose mission is to end school shootings and create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. The initiative works to reduce bullying, increase empathy and compassion, and help students recognize signs that could prevent school violence. You can check out this organization's work at: https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/
