MIDDLE SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS

Congratulations! to Wesley Hazzard and Christina Tong, the 6th and 8th grade winners of the 2016-2017 Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) essay contest. The DAR is a non-profit service organization devoted to America’s past, present, and future. Almost like a time capsule, the Daughters are avid supporters of American patriotism, and secure “America's future through better education for children.” They hold an essay contest annually, with a new topic each year. Last year’s prompt was to write a series of journal entries in the perspective of an someone visiting a national park, such as Yellowstone National Park or Grand Canyon National Park. Wesley Hazzard’s contest entry was about the Mammoth Cave National Park and Christina Tong the Everglades National Park.

Now that they have been selected as the Florida Keys Chapter winners for their corresponding grade, their essays will go onto to State, the next level of judging. After State is Division, and finally National. Let’s wish them good luck!

Why is it Important to Vote Results

In December of 2016, the Middle School was encouraged to submit an essay to the Elks essay contest. The prompt for the essay was ‘Why is it important to vote?’ The school had three weeks to complete the essay. Florida was split into two divisions for the contest. Fifth and sixth graders were in division 1; and seventh and eighth graders were in division 2. The essay could  not exceed 300 words. Seventh grader Hayden Marchinek won second place in Division 2 for Florida. This meant that his essay was rewarded with $750 and a plaque given to him at the local Elks lodge in Key West. The essay was less than a page long and consisted of 299 words. If you would like to preview the essay, click the link below.  In each division, first place was awarded $1000, second place got $750 and third place was received $500. If you are interested in the Elks essay contest visit Elks.org.
