SOLAR ECLIPSE IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Total Solar Eclipse

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be able to see the moon completely cover the sun. In Key West, we will see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk.  This is an awesome event for a science-centric school and we look forward to teaching about the event in class. However, there are some important precautions we all need to take to protect your child’s eyesight. Please read below and check out the weblinks to learn more on how to protect your children.
We are recommending that parents pick up children at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 21st so that you can safely enjoy the event and be out of maximum viewing window.  The afternoon will be excused for children who are picked up early.
When is the peak window in Key West?
Monday, August 21st
Begins 1:25 PM
Maximum View 2:57 PM (regular dismissal time)
Ends 4:19 PM
Magnitude: 0.77
What is the school doing?
We are having an optional early out at 12:30-1:00 PM so that parents can pick up their children before the eclipse is at its peak.  This will ensure that children are closely supervised during the time that could be harmful.  Parents may come to the office to pick up their students beginning at 12:30 PM.
Since this is a wonderful opportunity for students, we will livestream the event in the classrooms so that students can watch it safely.  We will NOT be taking students outside for recess, PE or any other activities after 1:00 PM.  Science teachers will also talk about the event with their classrooms.
What if I can’t pick up my child?
We will keep all of the students indoors until dismissal time and run “rainy day dismissal” – front car line only.  Walkers/bikers will be dismissed unless we hear otherwise from the parent (please email your teacher).

MWR will pick up the students at 12:30 and will allow students going to Youth to come at that time as well. If your child goes to Youth, please email your teacher so we dismiss appropriately. This will help us ensure that children are not gazing up at the sun during the peak window.
What about eclipse glasses?
Please be careful if you are purchasing glasses for your child.  You can no longer trust all glasses that have an IOS label because some have been counterfeited.  Some brands are already being recalled so stay alert.
The school is not comfortable providing viewing glasses to children as we cannot assume responsibility for how they are used or whether they are authentic.  Also, continued viewing with the glasses can still cause damage.  So, please check your glasses carefully and use the links below to educate yourself.
Where can I find more information about the eclipse?
