SIGSBEE SCOOP
Respect, Responsibility, Resilience
December 19-December 22
SUPPORTING THE CHILDREN OF OUR COMMUNITY
Please help us sponsor children in our community who are in need. The children we are "adopting" are living at Casa de Meredith and Samuel's House in Key West. These facilities offer shelter and support for intact families who are escaping abusive situations or who are homeless. Both facilities provide a substance-free, permanent place of residence for families who are establishing independence.Respect, Responsibility, Resilience

Your contributions, both items and monetary donations, will help to support them through the long holiday break.
Please click on the links below to sign up for needed donations. All donations are due on Monday, December 20th. We also need donations of wrapping paper and gift bags.

The Land Of The Free, And Home Of The Brave
By Zoe Booker
Equality swaddles the United States of America, like a mother would her child. This nation is fortified by its people. America is a nation undivided. Unlike other countries we stand together, we either all win or we all lose. Our tenacious country is one that many envy such as North Korea and Vietnam. The America that I believe in is one with equality for all races and sexes no matter our differences.
One of the characteristics to the America I believe in is equality for all races. America is a country with lucrative jobs everywhere. In 1619 African Americans were predominantly used as slaves, because of their race. By 1865 America took a turn for the better and abolished slavery and prerogative rights. We became equals. It states in the article The Opportunity Agenda, “The theme of equality was central to our nation’s founding, with the declaration that “all men are created equal.” Our country’s history has witnessed the gradual evolution of that core principle from a ruling class that countenanced slavery and subordination toward an egalitarian vision that embraces the inherent equality of all people.” This example states that the very foundations of America were built off of the extirpate of racial discrimination. It says that we have slowly evolved from our former selves, into a powerhouse nation.
Another trait of America is equality for all genders. In the 1600-1800 women were not equal to men. They had to work at home caring for children, or they worked in factories with low-paying jobs. All of that had changed by the 1900’s. We are a nation of equality, and we were destined to discover what we had been doing wrong for centuries. We turned the country around and all genders were then equal. Women were then able to prove what they could really do. One of America’s best doctors was Elizabeth Blackwell. She was a british-born physician and the first women to receive a medical degree in the United States.
Equality for all genders and races is a trait every country should hold close, but we are one of the only ones that do. We have set the bar for other countries to follow in our footsteps. America is the land of the free and the home of the brave.
