Sigsbee Scoop May 28- June 6

SIGSBEE SCOOP
May 28-June 6, 2017
Respect, responsibility, resilience
(Last issue of the 2017 school year)

Our eighth grade class is off to Cuba this week for an 8 day- 3 city visit.  Please note that Mrs. Jannes (principal), Ms. Gladding (office manager), Mr. Schwermer (technology specialist), Dr. Dougherty (math coach) and Mrs. Casler (reading interventionist) will be chaperoning the students and unavailable until Monday, June 4th.  Our graduating class did an amazing job of raising over $25,000 to make this trip possible.  Many of the students fundraised their entire fare.  We look forward to sharing photos from the first-ever SCS foreign travel.  Wish us luck!

The next Scoop will come out AFTER school is over for the year and will include pictures from year-end events and information for next year.

3rd GRADE FLORIDA STATE ASSESSMENT RESULTS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
WAY TO GO SIGSBEE 3rd GRADERS (teacher and parents)
The Florida Department of Education returns the 3rd grade FSA ELA results earlier than the rest of the assessments because there are regulations about mandatory retention in third grade for students scoring a Level 1 on the assessment.  Last week, we received our scores for our 3rd grade cohort.  The teachers and I could not be prouder that 88% of our students scored proficient on this assessment.  Only 1 student received a Level 1.  The mean proficiency for the state was 58%; for Monroe County the mean was 68%.  Sigsbee students scored well above this and ranked 2nd in the District- a testament to their hard work and dedication.  While we do not believe in measuring our students with test scores, this performance is reason for celebration.  WE ARE SO PROUD OF OUR THIRD GRADE CLASS!

*Third grade parents:  Mrs. Rosch will be emailing you your child's score via Jupiter.  We do not have printed reports from the state yet but we can tell you your child's proficiency level.  NO ONE at SCS will be retained because of this assessment based on our results!

STAFFING 2018
One of the most important and intensive tasks during the last several months of school involves seeking out the very best staff members for our students at Sigsbee.  At SCS, we begin the interview process in February so that we can ensure we find the most qualified candidates before they commit elsewhere.  Our interview committee consists of master teachers representing a range of grade levels and subjects.  They work with the principal to interview, observe, check references and place our staff members.  Key West is a transient community, not just for our military.   Unfortunately, we are accustomed to seeing resignations for moves out of the area.  We bid a fond farewell to the following staff members.  Thank you for your dedication to our Sigsbee Family.  Fair winds and following seas:
Mr. Alfonso- 2nd grade support teacher
Mrs. Anderson- Kindergarten support teacher & PTO staff representative
Mrs. Arce- office secretary
Ms. Cappuccino- K,1 & 5 science teacher
Mrs. Kama Cannon- gifted coordinator
Ms. Craig- 2nd grade teacher
Ms. Darby- 5th grade math teacher
Dr. Dougherty- math teacher and math coach
Mrs. Edwards- cafeteria worker
Mrs. Hudson- special education teacher
Mrs. Lefere- art support teacher
Ms. Shriver- 2nd grade support teacher
Ms. Twibell- 6th grade math teacher
Ms. Wissmann- 5th grade English teacher
While we can never replace a beloved staff member, we are pleased to announce that our interview committee worked incredibly hard to fully staff the school for next year and we are ready to go in August.

Please welcome:
Mrs. Antompietri- office secretary (changing positions)
Mrs. Audette- special education teacher
Mrs. Andrews- first grade teacher
Mrs. Clegg- support teacher
Mrs. Debarbo- cafeteria worker
Mrs. Newby- 8th grade science teacher & kayaking instructor
Mrs. Haughey- 6th grade math teacher (returning to us full-time)
Ms. Junker- support teacher
Mr. Fisher- 1st and 5th grade science teacher
Mrs. Kennedy- second grade teacher
Mrs. Menicocci- math/science interventionist
Mrs. Skiba- 7th grade math/Algebra teacher

In addition, we're excited to report that three of our teachers will be looping up a grade level with their students:
Mrs. Giusti- moving to second grade
Mrs. Hankins- moving to 5th grade literacy
Mrs. Sellner- moving to 4th grade literacy

Check our website in July for a full list of staff members with their grade levels assigned.  This is a fantastic team!

Key West Art & Historical Society ArtCamp!
at Fort East Martello offers new sessions for tweens and teens aged 10-16

Youth aged 10-16 can join in on the cultural immersion fun while engaging their passion for the arts and the environment with Key West Art & Historical Society’s ArtCamp!, beginning June 12 th through June 30 th with three sessions:

Teen Fossil Camp June 12 -June 16,
Pinhole Photography Camp: Technique June 19- June 23, and
Pinhole Photography Camp: Creating a Body of Work June 26-June 30.

The Teen Fossil Camp guides students in learning how to sculpt and cast bones working with tools in clay, plaster, and sand, with an educational focus on science, math and critical thinking. The Teen Pinhole Photography Camp sessions explore the physics of light, mechanics of the pinhole camera and elements of chemistry while gaining a foundation of art, design and the creative process through the world of film photography. These sessions encourage teens and the more mature pre-teen to creativity, empowerment, and educational excellence.

The Society’s ArtCamp! program, in operation for over thirty years and one of the oldest children’s summer camps in the Keys, marks the organization’s commitment to the many youth programming and educational initiatives that aim to “inspire a greater sense of place and historical understanding,” says KWAHS Executive Director Michael Gieda.

ArtCamp! weekly sessions for children and teens run the creative gamut to touch upon a variety of art, culture and the humanities to get children thinking, moving and making: Claymation;

Pirate Camp; Teen Fossil Camp; Sand Sculpting Camp; Pinhole Photography for Teens-Technique; Pinhole Photography for Teens- Creating a Body of Work; Wrecker’s Camp; Mask Making Camp; The Key Deer, the Rooster, and the Dolphin Camp; Praising the Palm Camp; Roller Coaster Camp; Summer Theatre Camp; and Mission Control Camp. Campers also have the experience of exploring Fort East Martello, an enclosed Civil War-era fort stewarded by Key West Art & Historical Society and the location for the weekly camp sessions.  Each week will have auxiliary activities and excursions pertaining to the specific sessions, including field trips to local museums, nearby beaches and gardens—all highlighting the abundant history and cultural assets of our islands while encouraging and expanding students in their knowledge of their local community.

ArtCamp! runs from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday – Friday, with a varying fee depending on the camp, with a discount for Society members. Included are all supplies, light snacks and weekly Friday pizza parties. Detailed descriptions of the Teen Camps and all of the ArtCamp! sessions and registration information can be found at KWAHS.ORG/LEARN  or by calling Adele Williams at 305-295- 6616, extension 115. Your museums.  Your community.  It takes an island.
