HURRICANE IRMA EDITION
Sigsbee families,
I hope this blog finds you safe and sheltered from the storm. I know there are a lot of uncertainties at the moment. One thing I've learned from living in Key West, is that our community is loving, courageous and resilient. There has been an outpouring of support and assistance in the last few days and this same compassion will get us all through anything. We already have other schools offering to help and we don't even know what kind of damage we sustained.
At this time, there are no determinations about school reopening or residents re-entering Monroe County. We will know a lot more tomorrow, after the emergency personnel hit the roads and the sky. Reports from Key West seem positive but the priority is on helping people first. We hope to get an update on our facility some time tomorrow. Feel comforted in the fact that SCS is on higher ground and has withstood serious storms in the past. We also just finished a major renovation with new roofs and impact windows. The staff was amazing in preparing and preserving the classrooms before evacuating. I am completely confident in our first responders and other community members who are devoted to our recovery. I know we have several Sigsbee-related police officers, military personnel, firefighters and business owners who are back home helping others. Thank you for your protection and bravery.
Should you need ANY assistance, please email me (eli.jannes@sigsbee.org) so that I can connect you with resources. I will keep you posted via email and this blog as soon as any information is available. In the meantime, this is a useful slideshow for talking to children about hurricanes:

There are many anxious people using social media for information. Please rely only on sites that are trustworthy. I emailed those out earlier today. Remember that Sigsbee Charter is not just a school, it is a passion. Our staff and our community are anxious for us to come home and open our doors.

As you hunker down, please remember to keep your children reading nightly. Encourage them to keep a journal of their adventures and stay positive! If they need something to do, have them write a thank you letter for those who stayed behind to help others. We will get those delivered in the right hands.
We carry our Sigsbee pride to all corners of the world and the hurricane.
Mrs. Jannes

Smathers Beach was looking lonely without children playing on its sand. This was just 3 days ago. |
