    Elementary REPORT CARDS
Elementary report cards will be released electronically this weekend.  The information below was crafted by the literacy team in order to help parents better understand the new descriptors.  Parents are invited to email your child's teacher with any questions about the report card or the grades assigned.  Third quarter will end with parent-teacher conferences.  A final report card will be released at the end of the academic year.

    Report Card Terminology Defined

    Elementary Reading

Print Concepts: An awareness of print in our world.  This includes understanding the difference between letters, words and punctuation.  Additionally this area includes an understanding that the English language is read top to bottom and left to right (directionality).

Reading Engagement: Includes reading stamina, goal setting, reading a variety of genre, and the ability to select appropriate leveled text.

Oral Reading/Early Reading:  Includes reading like a storyteller (phrases, fluent).
    • Use meaning to fix reading errors
    • Phonics, breaking words into sounds
    • Sight word reading
    • Rhyming

Comprehension:  Includes the ability to read text, process it and make meaning.
Some strategies readers use: retelling, inferencing, synthesizing, reflection, connection, cause/effect relationship

Response to Reading: Includes retelling and/or summarizing what has been read in addition to writing about the thinking students are doing as they read.  As the students progress through Elementary grades they begin responding to reading through writing.  First in short responses like stick on notes that progress to longer, more detailed paragraphs.  By the end of 4th grade students should be able to write a multi-paragraph literary essay.

    Elementary Writing

Focus/Organization: Includes writing for different reasons (ex. To inform, persuade, entertain).  Also includes writing that is written in a way that can easily understood.

Craft and Structure: Includes organizing writing (and illustrations) in a way that allows the reader to follow along.  This area includes writing in such a way that the reader is interested in reading the along.
    • Details ( in pictures and writing)
    • Sentence structure
    • Proper use of grammar

Mechanics: Includes writing legibly (spacing and letter formation), using developmental and conventional spelling to write words, and the use of a variety of punctuation.

Writer’s Work (habits): Includes the ability to write for grade appropriate length of time and uses feedback given from teachers/peers to strengthen writing.

    MIDDLE SCHOOL REPORT CARDS
Third quarter report cards will be released in Focus this weekend. Students in seventh and eighth grades will notice that their second quarter social studies grade is not visible. We will work to rectify this issue on Monday and let you know when your grade can be viewed. Feel free to contact your child's teachers with any questions about the report card format or your child's grades.

To access your child's report card, click on the report card link in the Messages box on the top right hand corner of your screen.
