Sigsbee has won a Golden School Award

The Golden School Awards are presented annually by the Florida Department of Education to recognize exemplary schools which promote parent and community engagement in education.
The Golden School Award recognizes elementary, secondary and adult schools with exemplary volunteer programs that meet certain criteria, including volunteer hours that are at least double the school's population.  We'd like to thank all of our parents, staff, military commands and community volunteers for helping us earn this award!
Mrs. Jannes will be receiving the award on behalf of our school community at this week's Monroe County School Board meeting.

KINDNESS CAMPAIGN
What Is “Mix It Up at Lunch”?
One of the most difficult social scenes for students is the cafeteria, where students tend to group only with people they know and are comfortable with.  Negotiating the room can be stressful, especially for new students.  The cafeteria is a great place to break boundaries, help students meet new people, and find some common ground.  Yesterday, we initiated a Mix It Up day in the cafeteria for grades 4-8.  Our counselors provided conversation starters at each table to help ease the discussions.  Students from each grade were randomly assigned tables for the period.

We are very proud of our students all of whom endured or embraced the challenge.  Everyone was respectful and open-minded and students were able to forge some new connections.  Our counselors, support staff and teachers joined several groups for encouragement.  We hope to continue this routine sporadically throughout the year,

National Mix It Up at Lunch Day will take place on October 22, 2019 and Sigsbee has registered to be a participating school.

What you can do at home... have a discussion about important times in your life when you were forced out of your comfort zone (i.e. moves, job interviews, trying out for a new team, asking for help, moving schools).  Acknowledge that feeling uneasy or nervous about putting yourself out there is natural and can become easier with practice.  Encourage your children to sit with someone new in class, work with a different partner, invite someone new to engage with after school.
