Teacher-of-the-Quarter
Congratulations Ms. Burnett
The Key West Chamber of Commerce recognizes outstanding teachers in each school quarterly.  At Sigsbee, the staff nominates and elects these outstanding individuals.  Our first winner is Ms. Kim Burnett, Sigsbee's kindergarten and fifth grade science teacher, also known as the Shark Club Advisor.  Below is the description of Ms. Burnett that will be read at the next Chamber meeting.

Kim Burnett joined the Sigsbee staff last year as an elementary science teacher and gifted coordinator.  She hit the ground running, drawing students and adults into her passion for science and environmental conservation.  Ms. Burnett impacts large numbers of students teaching multiple grade levels, sponsoring environmental clubs, introducing computer science initiatives and leading students through the District STEM fair.  She established a certified monarch butterfly garden on campus to show off her softer side while creating Sigsbee’s official Shark Club with a ferocious following.  Ms. Burnett is also involved in several community environmental organizations as an advocate for the environment.  Students, colleagues and community members flock toward Ms. Burnett for her always sunny disposition and pure enthusiasm.  She brings out the best in people wherever she goes.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th
We would like to invite all of our families to our DADS TAKE YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL DAY event! On September 27th, from 7:45am- 8:05 AM, we encourage all fathers to take their children to school and stay for early morning activities. All father figures are welcome including: stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, foster fathers and other significant male role models.

This initiative’s intent is to highlight the significant difference fathers and father figures can make by taking a more active role in their children’s educational experience. When fathers play a more active role in a child’s education, children perform better academically, have fewer discipline problems and become more responsible adults. We hope all fathers will take this opportunity to become more familiar with our school and staff, and that you will return often.

Since we have many children with fathers who are deployed or not present, we encourage you to invite other male figures to serve as "adopted dad" for that morning.  Active duty military members are encouraged to be in uniform as we are taking pictures and entering a contest with the Department of Education to compete for exceptional participation.

What about fathers who are working?  We've planned this event to take place during arrival and will only keep you for 15-20 minutes.  You can be off to work by 8:00 AM!  Please make sure you sign in at your child's classroom (or outside the main office if you do not have a child at school) so you can be counted!  Families will get 30 minutes of volunteer hours for participating!

PINWHEELS FOR PEACE IN THE NEWS
Thank you to all of the parents and students who helped to install our Pinwheels for Peace yesterday.  The students had a great time finding their pinwheel at recess and we look forward to permanently installing them on campus.  See the press coverage from Keys Weekly below, including the cover art using a sample of our stock.
