SIGSBEE SCHOOL REOPENING
SURVEY RESULTS & PLANS
We had approximately 225 families respond to our reopening survey and, as predicted, the responses reflected preferences for the full range of options for returning to school. The results from the survey will be used along with the recommendations of the school district task force to determine a series of plans for August. At this time, there have not been any definite decisions, largely because the number of positive cases and available information about the virus change frequently. There are some general agreements that will allow us to come together as a like-minded community:
- Everyone would prefer for the virus to disappear; yet, we know that is not going to happen before school starts.
- The health, safety and well-being of students and staff should drive the decision making, even when not convenient.
- In-person interactions at school are more meaningful and effective than what can be accomplished through long-term virtual instruction. We are all concerned about students' academic progress and social-emotional health if isolated for additional long periods.
- This is a difficult situation without a clear and easy answer. It's important to consider all perspectives and look at every angle.
- Not everyone needs the same thing.
- All stakeholders need to commit fully to any new procedures in order for them to be effective.
Sigsbee does have a Task Force working daily to develop a number of instructional and organizational plans. We are moving forward with the Governor's recommendation to create policies and protocols for students to return to campus with modifications in place. All of these procedures will follow CDC guidelines as they pertain to students and are feasible in a school setting. For example, we've placed additional portable classrooms on campus and reconfigured schedules and facilities to reduce class size and allow for physical distancing. We have a plan to make thoroughfares one direction. We've ordered signs, hand sanitizer, soap, and surface sanitizing products in large amounts. We are preparing to order school supplies so that students do not share tools. We've also trained our staff on virtual platforms to ensure we are providing the best online program we can, should we need to transition to online instruction.
Student and staff health, safety and well-being will continue to drive the decision making. It is our intention to have a number of well-developed plans to fall back on given directives from the Governor, FL Department of Education, the Monroe County School Board and our Sigsbee Charter School Board of Directors.
How might you prepare?
- Check our school calendar to plan for return dates for your child. You will notice K-1 grades have an earlier start date so that we can help the students transition to a new "normal," focusing on health and safety protocols. The calendar is subject to change should there be new directives.
- Help your child become independent with self-care prior to school starting. Make sure they are washing their hands regularly, avoiding touching their faces, and sneezing into their elbows or a tissue. Assist them in learning how to avoid putting hands on high-touch areas such as door knobs.
- Make sure your children know how to physically distance when necessary. For many, the return to school may mean interacting with others outside of their family for the first time. Students will need to be able to execute physical distancing regularly.
- Try out different face coverings, should they be required. While there hasn't been a final determination about mask wearing in classrooms, we know that there are currently rules in place for wearing masks indoors and when physical distancing is difficult (ages 6+). Be sure your child has a mask or face covering that he/she can manipulate independently.
- Be sure you are familiar with your child's sigsbee.org account (returning students only) and SeeSaw (K-2) or Google Classroom (3-8).
- Have your child participate in our summer live lessons with teachers (returning students until lottery occurs). This will keep them learning and engaged. Be sure they are ENGAGED during these lessons- it's a bit frustrating to teach a lesson to a number of screens with videos and microphones off.
- Continue to read the Scoop for updates. Information comes out frequently and this is the central communication platform for our school.
Thank you for your input, concern and creativity. I can assure you that our staff misses your children tremendously and will go above and beyond to keep them safe and flourishing.

2021 APPROVED SCHOOL CALENDAR
This is the approved calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. The SCS Covid-19 Task Force will continue to meet over the summer to plan for the opening of school and make any necessary adjustments based on emerging guidelines from the CDC and WHO, as well as the Monroe County School District Task Force. While we are working on a plan to bring students back to campus, we recognize that this plan could quickly shift should we see a spike in Covid-19 cases.
SCS LOTTERY: JULY 9th
The application window for our lottery is officially open for new students.
- Friday, July 3rd: applications must be received to be included in the 2020-21 lottery
- Thursday, July 9th, 10:00 am: lottery
We will confirm receipt of your application within five school days. Please contact Mrs. Rosch via e-mail (Leslie.Rosch@Sigsbee.org) or by calling (305) 294-1861 with any questions.
Note: Normally, Sigsbee receives more applicants for enrollment than seats available at our school. All returning students are guaranteed a seat as long as they are in good standing. Therefore, be sure that your account balance has been addressed.
Siblings of Sigsbee students receive priority placement. However, it is important that each incoming sibling has applied before the deadline. Please make sure you fill out the Application for Enrollment as soon as possible by visiting: https://www.sigsbee.org/families/applicationregistration
Withdrawal forms can also be found on the Application site. It is important for all non-returning families to notify us as soon as possible so that we can offer seats to those in the lottery.
