THANKSGIVING BASKET DONATIONS

During November, our month of giving, SCS classes will be collecting non-perishable items to create Thanksgiving baskets for struggling local families.  This food helps to sustain students and their families while school is closed over holidays.  Typically, we donate food for over 60 families through this effort, most of whom include local high school students who are trying to successfully earn their degrees while living in poverty.

Your role:  Check out the weekly BOGO ads and take your child to the grocery store to purchase items assigned to your grade level.  Send the items into school any time before November 16th. Please try to avoid items packaged in glass.

Our role:  The S.A.V.E. Promise Club will be organizing the donations, creating decorated boxes and cards, and helping to prepare your donations for delivery before Thanksgiving Break.  Thank you for your generosity!

Kindergarten:  Peanut butter and Jelly
First Grade: Condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo)
Second Grade: Ramen Noodles or Dry Pasta
Third Grade: Macaroni and Cheese
Fourth Grade: Rice and Beans
Fifth Grade: Nuts (cans or jars)
Sixth Grade: Granola bars or Nutrigrain bars
Seventh Grade: Cereal
Eighth Grade: Canned goods (vegetables, soups)

SQUID GAMES: PARENTS BEWARE

Many of you know about the increasingly popular Netflix Show, Squid Games, recently released as a violent dystopian drama that features adults brutally competing in versions of children's games like red light-green light.  This show is rated for mature audiences only (ages 17+) but has been attracting much younger viewers and we are seeing some disturbing consequences for all of our students.

Some students are mimicking these games on the playground and engaging in more physical behavior.  This is consistent with the "fight to the death" violent mentality of the show.  Even though some parents may feel their child can distinguish between fiction and reality, our playground encounters suggest otherwise.  We are strongly recommending that you restrict your children's access to this show and take time to explain to them that the actions of the characters are completely inappropriate and fictional.  We appreciate your support in this matter.

On December 14, 2012, 20 children and 6 staff members lost their lives to gun violence at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. From this tragedy came Sandy Hook Promise, an organization whose main goal is ending gun violence in schools and creating student advocacy groups against violence. These groups are called S.A.V.E. Promise Clubs (Students Against Violence Everywhere). Sigsbee is proud to have a S.A.V.E. Promise Club. Our club sponsor, Ilinke Royse, is running the NYC marathon on behalf of Sandy Hook Promise and fundraising for the organization. SHP provides resources to S.A.V.E. Promise Clubs and offers programs to effectively teach youth and adults how to prevent school violence, shootings, and other harmful acts. These early-prevention measures empower everyone to help keep schools and communities safe.  Here is the link if you would like to donate: https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/ilinke-royse

Thanks to the amazing efforts of our S.A.V.E Promise Club and the generosity of our students and families, we far exceeded our $550 goal. Sigsbee raised $1219 for Rotary International's campaign to eradicate polio across the globe. We are SO PROUD of our community and thankful for our ability to help protect others.
