MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD (MOMC)

In April, we celebrate our military-dependent students who serve their country by making sacrifices that are an inherent part of being a military-connected student.  Sigsbee is proud to serve 266 military-connected youth, 50% of our school population, as well as several military spouses and partners who serve on our staff.  Did you know that:

  • most military-connected students move between 5-8 times during their school experience?
  • approximately 200,000 school-aged military-connected children move every year?
  • purple is the color that you get when you mix all of the colors of the various armed forces, which is why we "Purple Up" for military kids
  • the dandelion is the flower of the military child because it is resilient and blooms where it is planted
Take note of our special Friday activities this month.  We are thanking our military-connected students for their service.

PARENTS BEWARE!
Spring fever is around the corner and the staff is asking for your help on some unusual behaviors we've been seeing from students this year.  Changes happen when we work together.  Please review the problems we've noted below and consider what you can do to help!

PROBLEM: We are seeing an escalation in cases of students accessing inappropriate internet sites while on their devices at home.  Remember- our security software does not extend to your home networks.  Students are not mature enough to handle the content they are browsing.  We've seen a dramatic escalation in the number of students using language that is offensive, sharing comments that are not appropriate for children of their age and finding sites that talk about self-harm.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please consider monitoring your child's internet access and taking their devices away from them before they retire for the evening.  Create a contract for appropriate use with your child.  Take the device away if the contract is broken.

PROBLEM:  We've had to re-establish classroom behavior expectations repeatedly.  A respectful and supportive classroom is necessary for students to perform well academically and to connect with each other socially.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:  When you talk to your children about the school day, don't just focus on academics.  Ask them if they treated others kindly.  Were they respectful to their teachers?  They will be cued in that they have an important role in creating a respectful and responsible school community.

PROBLEM: PHONES-  need to be off at all times while on campus.  It is amazing how distracted and addicted students are to their phones.  Phones will be confiscated if they are used without permission or make distracting noises in class (buzzing, ringing).  After the first offense, parents will need to come pick up the phone at school.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please talk to your children about this.  We are trying to protect the integrity of the classroom instruction.  Don't text your child during the day.  The office is happy to deliver important messages to them.

PROBLEM- VAPING-  we are hearing reports of middle school students vaping in bathrooms.  Bathrooms are monitored regularly.  However, we do not have enough staff to be present in these areas at all times.  Vapes are often hidden in phone cases, backpacks and hoodies.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: If you are the parent of a middle school student, please talk to them about the dangers of vaping and make sure they understand that vaping on campus is a police matter.  Search their stuff and know what a vape can look like.

PROBLEM- SEXUAL NOISES (yes, we have to talk about this)- There are a group of students in elementary school who are moaning and groaning for laughs.  I certainly hope they don't fully understand the connotation behind these noises.   Teachers have warned these students that if they continue this behavior, they will face more serious consequences as the noises are unwanted and upsetting to others.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:  Talk to your students about selecting friends who support them in making good choices and bring out the best in them.  If a friend is asking you to do something that you know will get you in trouble, they are not a true friend.  We always tell students that they can only control their own behavior and choices.  If your child is choosing to act appropriately, this won't be an issue.
